The Department of Economics at LUMS - MGSHSS is a growing department. It is reputated as the premier institution for economics education in Pakistan. It has built its name as an internationally recognised centre of theoretical and applied research in economics. It contributes in developing economists dealing the frontier of economic knowledge in the country.

Why Study Economics?

Studying Economics make us deal with some of the most crucial questions country is facing today; majore questions of growth, prosperity, equity, globalisation, and the role of government are the main concern of the study. Its importance is for all societies cannot be over emphasised and it is even more significant for a developing society, striving to achieve equitable and sustainable economic growth.

BSc (Honours) in Economics

LUMS focus to create bright young economists who will be a valuable asset to the economic think tanks of Pakistan. The BSc Economics program offers a wide variety of courses, including Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Econometrics, Development, Trade and Finance. Courses are geared towards both mainstream and heterodox theory, and empirical evidence, which ensures that a broad base of perspectives, new ideas, and applications are presented to students.

LUMS - MSc Economics

Graduates of the MSc Economics Programme have the option to either seek jobs in the public and private sectors in Pakistan or to pursue higher studies overseas. LUMS graduates have established themselves as highly marketable individuals with a diverse set of relevant skills. Assistance provided by the institute helps students make informed career choices. Development, banking, education, research and consultancy are some of the sectors that actively seek LUMS MSc Economics graduates. The degree concentrates on various areas of Economics, Public Policy, Finance and Development.

MSc Economics Admission Eligibility and Dates

Admission to the MSc Economics Programme is based entirely on merit. Applicants will be assessed on the following factors:
  • Academic record
  • Performance in the Admission Test(s)
  • Submission of a completed application form and all required supporting documents
  • Letters of recommendation

Academic Record

Applicants are eligible to apply for admission if they fulfill one of the following academic qualifications:
  • Minimum of sixteen (16) years of education leading to a Masters or Bachelors (four-year) degree recognised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan;
  • Three-year Bachelors degree from an international university recognised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan.

Admission Test for MSc Economics

Applicants can either take LUMS Graduate Admission Test (LGAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) in order to be considered for admission.

All applicants applying to the MSc Economics (One-year) Programme must take the LUMS Economics Placement Test in addition to the above mentioned test(s).
LUMS Economics Placement Test will be based on Intermediate Microeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics and Basic Econometrics. The Placement Test will be conducted simultaneously in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.

Studying for a degree in Economics, Business Economics or Economics and Finance means that you will be learning an exciting, relevant subject in a friendly, well-regarded department. As well as aiming to provide you with a sound grasp of core economics, finance and business principles, LUMS emphasise to use these principles and put them into action.


A degree in Economics can lead into many career areas. Some are obvious, others are not. Surprisingly, relatively few Economics graduates will begin a career as a professional economist directly after graduation – a postgraduate degree is usually required for such posts. Statistics show that the majority of Economics students after graduation obtain employment within six months of graduating. The jobs they get are many and varied, although with an emphasis on the finance sector (including banking, accountancy, tax advice, actuarial work, insurance and trading).
